Method and assumptions

The wall-face area is the entered length multiplied by the entered visible height. It is a simple rectangle in square metres, not the amount of material to order. The result combines that area with separate questions for the selected material, access route, existing wall and use of the higher ground.

The tool does not work out a price or test whether a wall is safe. Its assumptions are one straight section of uniform visible height. It does not account for buried depth, changing levels, curves, corners, foundations, drainage volumes, soil conditions, loads or the dimensions of individual blocks. Separate wall sections need their own measurements.

The construction questions reflect the need to assess the complete site. Approval cannot be decided from wall height alone: Brisbane City Council's retaining-wall guidance sets out conditions and the distinction between building and planning requirements. Ask the relevant provider or certifier how they apply to your proposal.

Keep your result handy and describe the garden outcome you want. A site assessment can resolve the details that this planning tool cannot.
